Jamaat mulls hartal

DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami might call a nationwide daylong hartal for Tuesday as International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) fixed the day for pronouncing verdict in war crimes case against party’s Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami. 

ICT-1 on Monday fixed Tuesday for pronouncing verdict in war crimes case against Nizami.

The sources said, hartal would be enforced on Tuesday, which would be increased for a day, if the verdict goes against the party.

Increase of hartal hours would also depend on government’s behavior to the party, added the sources.

The policy makers, however, are  now thinking about the agenda that include hartal on Tuesday and Wednesday, countrywide doa mahfil on Friday.

The agenda may also be changed in the course of the time.

The hartal enforcement may increase for a day based on the degree of the verdict, hinted the sources.

No announcement of hartal has come till filling this report at 3:30pm on Monday.

Banglanews came to know after talking to the party’s policy makers that it would announce the hartal after following delivery of the verdict.

But Majority of the policy makers has favored to enforce hartal on the day of the verdict delivery.

Earlier, the 3-member tribunal of ICT-1 comprising Justice Anwarul Haque, Jahangir Hossain and Justice M Enayetur Rahim fixed the date on Monday.   

On March 24, the same tribunal said the verdict will be delivered any day as the judgment procedure was concluded on that day.

 On May 28, 2012, the tribunal indicted the Jamaat Ameer for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

On June 29, 2010, Nizami was arrested after a magistrate court in Dhaka issued arrest warrant in connection with a criminal case over hurting religious sentiment of Muslims.

Later on July 22, the tribunal shown him arrested in the war crimes case.
