DHAKA: Ruling Awami League government’s move to alter the 5th amendment of the constitution is aimed at establishing ‘Bakshal regime’ that would be prohibited by mass movement, BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain said.

Following a meeting with the top leaders of four-party alliance, Delwar said, “The governments plan to establish Bakshal regime will thwarted by mass movement. We will protect the freedom of the country.”

During the meeting with BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in the chair, the alliance leaders assured the main opposition of their presence during the agitation programmes from now on.

Delwar said the ruling party formed the committee before placing the proposal in the parliament which is unconstitutional.

“The government’s plans have more long term issues than the mere constitutional amendment,” he said.

The meeting started at around 8.45pm and ended at 11.15 pm Wednesday.

BNP standing committee leader Nazrul Islam Khan, MK Anwar and senior joint secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Jamaat-e-Islami acting chief Makbul Ahmed, its leaders Sayed Abdullah Md Taher, secretary general Abdul Latif Nezami, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman Andalib Rahman Partho, secretary general Shamim Al Mamun, Ameer of Khelafat Majlish Muhammad Ishak, JAGPA president Shafiul Alam Prodhan were present.
