Work for common people`s interest, not to topple government, PM tells her rival

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sunday advised opposition leader Khaleda Zia to call a halt to movement for ousting the government and work for the common people`s interest.

"Stop the heinous politics of killing people and prepare the ground for serving people’s interest," said Hasina, in a sharp rebuttal to her political archrival’s observations made Saturday at her party’s executive committee meeting that time is ripe for anti-government mass movement.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of a voluntary blood donation programme organized by Bangladesh Krishak League at Dhanmondi to mark the beginning of the mourning month August with its President Mirza Abdul Jalil in the chair.
“Try to attain people’s confidence and trust and take a vow for not committing corruption and patronizing militancy," she further said in her advice.
"Being a Muslim how Khaleda Zia gives direction for burning another Muslim to death?" She posed a question.

She also said the opposition leader is trying to create the ground for toppling government by killing people as the Awami League-led grand-alliance government is running the country “fairly”.

She warned that the countrymen wouldn’t vote to power those who “committed corruption, plundering, and killings and created militancy” in the country.
The PM also urged her party leaders and workers to work for the people with the spirit and ideology of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build up a happy, prosperous Bangladesh.

Awami League Presidium Member and Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Awami League advisory council member Advocate Rahmat Ali, Food Minister Dr Abdur Razzak, Health Minister Professor Dr AFM Ruhal Haque and General Secretary of Krishak League Motahar Hossain Mollah, among others, also spoke at the programme.
