DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami is likely to announce another spell of two-day countrywide hartal for Wednesday and Thursday, if the verdict of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in the war crimes case against its leader Mir Quasem Ali goes against him.
The party has taken the decision on hartal at an emergency meeting of its central executive council, the highest policy-making body of the party, on Thursday noon.
The ICT-2 will deliver its verdict on Quasem, the accused mastermind of the intellectuals’ killings, in war crimes cases on Sunday.
A member of the party’s Majlis-e-Shura, on condition of anonymity, said banglanews that they will enforce another phase of 48-hour nonstop nationwide hartal, if the verdict goes against Mir Quasem Ali.
Jamaat’s publicity wing assistant M Ibrahim told banglanews on Thursday night that the announcement of hartals may come on Wednesday and Thursday, if Quasem deprives of justice.
The party, however, may spare Tuesday of the next week out of their protest agenda as the Holy Ashura falls on the day.
Earlier, the party is observing a 72-hour nationwide hartal, in two spells, beginning from Thursday, protesting the death sentence given by ICT-1 against its chief Matiur Rahman Nizami for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
