DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami will observe the 48-hour second phase hartal from 6:00am Sunday to 6:00am Tuesday protesting death penalty to party’s Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.
Earlier, Jamaat marked the 1st phase of three-day hartal across the country amid stray incidents of picketing, beginning from 6:00am Thursday to 6:00am Friday.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed across the country to avert any untoward situation ahead of the hartal.
BGB public relations officer Mohsin Reza told the media that the BGB was deployed on Saturday evening.
Jamaat-e-Islami announced that Khulna city would remain out of purview of the hartal for Monday for the second test cricket match between Bangladesh and visiting Zimbabwe.
City Jamaat unit Ameer Maulana Abu Kalam Azad made the announcement on Saturday evening.
On Wednesday, Jamaat announced the hartal for Thursday, Sunday and Monday minutes after International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) handed down death sentence to its Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami on charges of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Besides, Jamaat is likely to announce another spell of two-day countrywide hartal for Wednesday and Thursday, if the verdict of ICT in the war crimes case against its leader Mir Quasem Ali goes against him.
