RANGPUR: Law enforcers, in separate drives, arrested 255 people, including 31 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhattra Shibir across Rangpur division to prevent possible violence during hartal.
Police nabbed them from different areas of the division sometimes between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
Moreover, police arrested Nur Hossain, Jamaat’s nayeb-e-amir of Rangpur city unit at noon in the day.
He was arrested from Paglapir area of Kotwali Thana.
Most of the captives are accused in different cases related to mugging, robbing, drug dealings and other incidents.
During the drives, police also recovered liquor, Phensedyl, Yaba tablets and different types of drugs.
However, the Jamaat-Shibir men were detained on suspicion of that they might carry out subversive activities centering hartal.
Rangpur Kotwali Thana Officer-in-Charge Abdul Kader Zilani confirmed the matter to banglanews.
