Mentors of 5th, 7th amendments to face action: Obaidul

DHAKA: Awami League presidium member Obaidul Kader said after the abrogation of the 5th and the 7th amendments to the constitution, the government would now decide action against behind-the-scene actors in bringing such repugnant constitutional changes.

He made the comment Saturday as the High Court Thursday in its verdict declared illegal the seventh constitutional amendment that had given legal cover to general HM Ershad’s takeover and his military rule.

He was addressing a discussion on ‘15th August and 21st August’ organized by Noukar Notun Projonmo at Dhaka Reporters Unity, marking the two tragedies in Bangladesh’s political scene.

Kader also said, “The court gave directives about the masterminds of the incident. But there should also be directives against persons who acted from behind the screen.”

Mentioning that justices had administered oath to those who usurped power illegally, the ruling–party leader said, “There should also be court instruction so that justices cannot administer them.”

Mentioning that justices had administered oaths to those who took over power illegally, the AL leader said, “There should also have court instruction so that justice cannot administer them oath.”

AL Organizing Secretary Ahmad Hossain and Editor of Ajker Surjadoy Khondakar Mozammel Haque also spoke at the meet with Projanmo president Badiuzzaman Rassel in the chair.
