AL wants to reinstate Baksal: Nazrul

DHAKA: The Opposition BNP Monday came up with the presumption that Awami League is bent on reviving Baksal, the one-party system of government introduced under socialist model after the independence.

Acting General Secretary of the ruling party Mahbubul Alam Hanif Sunday clearly stated that they want to go ahead pursuing the ideology of Baksal.

In a sharp reaction, BNP`s Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan Monday said the ruling Awami League eventually admitted that they want to reinstate Baksal.

"We have stated in thousand words that the Awami League is moving towards Baksal though they give lip service to democracy. It has been proved by the leaders of the AL," said the BNP leader, citing the speech of Mahbubul Alam Hanif.

He made the comment at a programme in observance of Tarique Rahman`s release day organized by Jatiyatabadi Swecchasebak Dal at Mahanagar Natyamancha at Gulistan in the city.

Khan also alleged that the government does not really believe in democracy.

"The country and the democracy are not secure at the hands of the government. So we have to go for a strong movement against the government," he said.

With Habibunnabi Sohel Khan, president of the Dal, in the chair, the meeting was also addressed by Sarafat Ali Sapu, General Secretary, Swecchasebak Dal, and Abdus Salam, former general secretary of the city BNP.
