DHAKA: Opposition BNP’s senior joint-secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Saturday said that an “unbearable” situation is now prevailing in the country for “unrelenting repression” by the government on the party’s activists and leaders.
“People can get rid of this through combined movement, and if the government makes any interference, the movement will get stronger,” said the BNP leader.
The complaint came from a meeting organized at the National Press Club by ‘Odhikar’ to observe the International Anti Torture Day.
Adilur Rahman, secretary of Odhikar, presided over the meeting and columnist Farhad Majhar presented the keynote.
Replying to a question about the predicament of Daily Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman, Mirza Fakhrul said, “The torture by the ruling government has surpassed all past records in the world.”
Awami League leaders Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayan and Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Prof Dr Asif Nazrul, feminist activist Farida Akhter, Biplobi Workers Party general secretary Saiful Haque and Mahbubul Alam of the Communist Party of Bangladesh also spoke at the meeting.
