RAJSHAHI: The house tutors of 10 student dormitories at Rajshahi University mostly stay away from the halls at night, residents said, as they feel a little sense of insecurity.
As a result of the truancy of their dorm guardians, students do not get help immediately from the house tutors when they face any problem at night and small problems turn into big troubles.
University sources said among 10 halls, Sher-e-Bangla Fazlul Haq Hall, Shah Maqhdum Hall, Syed Ameer Ali Hall, Shahid Shamsuzzoha Hall and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall have four resident teachers each.
There are five teachers each for Nawab Abdul Latif Hall, Mader Bukhs Hall, Shahid Suhrawardy Hall and Ziaur Rahman Hall and seven for Shahid Habibur Rahman Hall.
The teachers are attached to these halls for staying at night with all other facilities, including their particular rooms, but, most of the time, they reportedly live outside the dorms.
But, most of the 47 teachers do not stay at halls at night though they are enjoying all facilities given by the university, some students lamented.
General students deplored that there was no guardian beside them when any occurrence took place among leaders-activists of different student organizations.
One student, wishing anonymity, opined that it would have been possible to avoid big clashes if house tutors had stayed at night.
In one avoidable incident, Chhatra League leaders Niaz and Shubra were beaten up severely by Chhatra Shibir activists in Shahid Suhrawardy Hall midnight on March 12, 2009.
Later, a student was killed and several others were injured in a clash between Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir on the RU campus.
Two Chhatra League leaders were injured in a clash between the rival Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir men on February 8 this year over capturing seats in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall.
Later, Chhatra Shibir activists killed a Chhatra League activist named Faruq Hossain, a resident of Shah Maqhdum Hall.
Convener of the Provost Council Professor Belayet Hossen told banglanews24.com.bd, “We would take effective decision after discussing the matter in meeting of the Provost Council.”
