GAZIPUR: At least six people were injured as garment workers went on the rampage again in Gazipur factories Tuesday to press home their demand for weekend holiday and a fixed date for monthly payments.
Earlier in the morning, the garment workers of a factory in East Chandana area observed work abstention and staged violent demonstrations to press for weekly holiday on Friday and payment of salary by the 5th of every month.
Later, the authorities declared holiday for Tuesday for their workers of knitting section.
Sub-Inspector of Joydebpur thana Tarikuzzaman told banglanews24.com.bd that the workers gathered in front of factory gate at 8 am. A clash ensued when security guards prevented the workers from entering the factory, which left at least six injured.
“At one stage of pushing and shoving, the agitating workers stormed into the office room and damaged machinery and the close-circuit camera,” says a spot report.
On information, police reinforcements rushed in and took the situation under control.
Administrative Officer of the factory Mamunur Rashid said they were preparing the salary sheets of the workers to make the payments of July on August 5 when the trouble started.
“Some workers who remained absent tried to be on the salary sheet. They later vandalized valuable machinery worth about Tk 50 lakh,” he added.
