Garment workers rampage as co-worker drops dead from factory rooftop

DHAKA: Hordes of garment workers barricaded roads and vandalized vehicles in the city’s Mirpur area as a female worker dropped dead from the roof of their seven-storied factory building Friday.

Witnesses said a clash erupted when police charged baton on the unruly protestors and fired teargas shells, leaving ten people wounded, including law enforcers and workers.

The agitating workers alleged that Beauty, 17, a senior operator of Vertex Fashion Ltd Beauty, was murdered and then thrown off the rooftop.

Police arrested Jharna Begum, floor in-charge of the apparel factory, as a suspect in the “killing” of Beauty, hailed from Shariatpur

Two workers of the factory were also held as they “attacked and injured police personnel during the clash”, police sources said.

The sources said the agitated workers blocked traffic on the road at Mirpur-1 at noon and damaged vehicles following their colleague’s death, which remained shrouded in mystery.

A number of workers told banglanews24.com.bd that some of them saw Beauty fall down from the roof “half an hour after an altercation with the factory’s floor in-charge” at about 9 am.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police Elias Sharif told banglanews24.com.bd that police took the situation under control and arrested Jharna Begum.

The deceased was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue. A case was filled.
