International Crimes Tribunal begins: Petition against Nizami, Mujaheed, Kamaruzzaman, Quader filed

DHAKA: The international crimes tribunal began its work Sunday with its lawyers’ panel submitting petition against Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Matiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mujaheed, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Molla.

Three lawyers of seven-member panel led by Syed Al Malum submitted the petition with the Tribunal Registrar Shahinul Islam at 10am Sunday.

The chief prosecutor of the panel Golam Arif Tipu told journalists that the petition was filed with the tribunal so that the investigation agency can work properly, the arrested Jamaat-e-Islami leaders cannot flee and obstruct the trial in any way.

Asked if any specific petition has been filed, Tipu said the petition called for detention and arrest of the accused for crime against humanity, genocide, loot, rape, gang rape, setting fire at school, college, madarasa, church and pagoda under the International Crimes Tribunals Act 1973. The petition also calls for arrest of accused for under-investigation war crimes.
