NARSINGDI: Seven people were killed and 20 injured in a terrible traffic mishap as a loaded truck rammed into a bus on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Shibpur upazila on Saturday morning.
According to police and witnesses, a rice-laden truck collided head-on with a Dhaka-bound bus of Swapno Bilash Pariban in Kundapara area at about 9am.
“After the violent collision, the bus skidded off the road and the truck fell into a roadside ditch,” says a spot account of the fatal accident.
Six bus passengers died on the spot while another on way to hospital.
At first the injured were admitted into different hospitals of the district. Three of them were later sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Kalam Mia, 13, a student of a Madrasha in Lalpur area, Eddris Ali, 40, of Madhabdi village, Jasim, 35, of Bajra village under Kuliarchar upazila, Kaushor, 30, of Gazaria area under Bhairab upazila, Rashid Mia, 30, hailed from Ibrahimpur area and Masud Rana, 35, and Hossain Mia, 33, of Sarrabad village under Belaba upazila.
Police sent four bodies to Narsingdi Hospital morgue for autopsy and another three bodies were handed over to their families without postmortem.
Police said the drivers and helpers of both the vehicles fled the scene after the terrible accident—latest one in a series of tragic mishaps, mostly attributed to rash driving and lax enforcement of road rules.
