DHAKA: Nine more garment workers were arrested on charges of ransacking factories, and looting wireless and bullet-loaded arms from police in Ashulia area.
Police picked them up from different workers’ colonies at Jamgora in Ashulia in a raid from Monday midnight to Tuesday morning.
The accused are AL-Amin, Wasim, Swapon, Abu Taleb, Jahirul, Shah Alam, Jaman, Hasan and Jakir.
“The accused were identified by using video footage,” said Mozammel Haq, Additional Police Super of Dhaka. They were produced before a court.
He added raids were going on to arrest those who created anarchy.
Ashulia thana acting Officer -in-Charge Sub-Inspector Mostafa Kamal said, “Raid will continue until the recovery of the wireless set, bullets and arms of police which were looted.”
The RMG violence sparked off after the government had announced a new wage scale with minimum Tk 3,000 per month for the garment sector on July 29, as the workers stuck to their demand for TK 5,000.
At that time, one nine-MM pistol loaded with 16 bullets and a wireless set of police were taken away.
Police filed cases against 60 of the demonstrating workers in this connection.
