DHAKA:  New York based body Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Tuesday requested the government to “immediately stop its serious and continued harassment” of trade union leaders, labor rights activists, and workers in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry.

In a letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Phil Robertson of the HRW said the security forces are not entitled to use excessive force to quell the protests.

The HRW condemned instances of violence by the protesters as well as incidents where security forces may have used excessive force to quell the protests.

“We seek your immediate intervention to stop serious harassment,” the letter said.

The HRW also sent copies to Home Minister Shahara Khatun and Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni.
