DHAKA: A leader of the ruling Awami League and probable councilor candidate for Dhaka City Ward No 56 was shot dead on Friday evening in the capital’s Segunbagicha area, police and locals said.

Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Rezaul Karim said Ibrahim Ahmed, 40, an Awami League leader and resident of Topkhana Road area, was shot down at around 8pm at Segunbagicha in the city centre.

A couple of youths took his bullet-hit body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Bullets pierced Ibrahim’s chin and head, doctors said.

“The youths left the hospital hurriedly after dropping the body,” one medical source said.

OC Rezaul said he sent his team to the spot.

Ibrahim, son of Saleh Ahmed, a resident of 26 Topkhana Road, was likely to vie for the next city corporation elections.

He published posters and banners seeking support from the local people for the councilor election, an inhabitant of Topkhana Road area said.
