TUNGIPARA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday paid a rich tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of National Mourning Day by placing wreaths at the grave of the great architect of the Nation.
Hasina was flown to Tungipara in the morning where Bangabandhu was laid to eternal rest after a bloody coup on this day in 1975.
After paying tribute, Hasina along with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana stood beside the grave in solemn silence. Quran recitation took place while special munajat was offered for the salvation of the departed soul of the father of the nation.
Among others, Cabinet members, chiefs of three armed forces and senior leaders of Awami League were present.
Later, she distributed sewing machine among destitute women.
In a brief speech, Hasina said her government wants to make the women folks of the country self-dependent so that the country develops and progress.
Milad mahfil and munajat after Zohr prayer will be held at Mazar Complex mosque where the Prime Minister will be present.
Special security measures have been heightened for the mourning-day programmes in different parts of Gopalganj, Tungipara, Kotalipara and Moksudpur upazilas.
