DHAKA: Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni Sunday said the government has sent letters to different foreign governments asking their support for return of the “condemned killers” of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

“We have sent formal letters to the governments of the countries wherein the convicted killers are absconding or might have been residing,” she told journalists after a function arranged by Kendriyo Kochi Kachar Mela marking the National Mourning Day.

The Foreign Minister said the Awami League government had formed a taskforce which has been revived to run in the fugitives. “We are trying to bring the condemned killers back to the country through the taskforce,” she said.

Moni criticised Ziaur Rahman’s government for promulgating the indemnity ordinance to protect the self-confessed killers of Bangabandhu and rehabilitate them in Bangladesh missions abroad.

She alleged that Zia’s government had portrayed Bangladesh abroad as a country of killers. The war crimes trial which began during Bangabadhu’s regime was halted.

Director of Kendriyo Kochi Kachar Mela Khandakar Ibrahim Khaled presided over the program.

Language veteran Abdul Matin, poet Rubi Rahman MP, Dil Monowara Monu and Dr. Mohit Kamal also spoke.
