KHULNA: Armed assailants shot dead a UP chairman in Fultala upazila headquarters Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abu Sayed Badal, chairman of No 2 Damudar union in Fultala upazila. Badal was the brother of Fultala BNP president and upazila chairman Alauddin Mithu.

Kazi Abu Daud, OC of Fultala Thana, told banglanews24.com.bd that the assailants opened fire on Badal who was standing in front of the upazila parishad in the morning, leaving him seriously injured.

Local people rushed him to the Khulna Medical College Hospital where he died at about 11.45 am, the OC said.

Badal was elected chairman of the union for several times. His father Sardar Abul Kashem was also shot dead by the terrorists in the office of Fultala UNO in 1998, police said.

The killing sparked off strong protest as the supporters of Badal barricaded the Khulna-Jessore road, disrupting traffic for an hour.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to avoid any trouble.
