MEHERPUR: A top leader of an outlawed extremist group was kidnapped and killed in Gangni upazila by his rivals.

Police on Monday morning recovered the body from a road at Baniapukur in the upazila.

The deceased, Atiar Rahman, 40, was a top leader of the banned underground outfit Janajuddha.

“He was accused in a number of cases, including of murder, bomb attack and abduction,” police said.

Gangni thana OC Motiar Rahman said Atiar’s rivals picked him up from his house and slaughtered him.

He said, “Atiar had created a reign of terror in the area and the killing might have taken place for establishing supremacy over the area.”
