DHAKA: A Dhaka court for the fifth time deferred the date for the hearing on charge framing in a tax-evasion case against former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar till October 10.

Mojammel Hossain, acting judge of Dhaka Special Judges` Court-3, issued the order after Babar’s lawyer Sharfuddin Khan Mukul sought time for the indictment hearing.

Special prosecutor Mohammad Kabir Hossain moved for the state.

On February 14 this year, Deputy Tax Commissioner of the National Board of Revenue Syed Zakir Hossain filed the case against the detained former minister.

NBR in its case statement mentioned that Babar, director of Master Electronic Industries Limited, evaded the payment of Tk 2,65,44,122 in income tax on his income of Tk 8,06,80,122 for the fiscal years 1999-2000 to 2008-2009.

Babar repeatedly provided “false information about his real income and expenditure”, alleged the NBR statement.

He was shown arrested in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack case and remanded a number of times.
