DHAKA: Some workers of the ruling Awami League and its youth front Juba League swooped on police in Nikunja area under city’s Khilkhet thana on Tuesday night during an eve-teasing incident, leaving four policepersons injured.

The attackers also snatched away the pistol of a sub-inspector during the melee, police said.

The injured are Khilkhet thana operation officer Dina Alam, Sub-Inspector Habibul Islam Habib and constables Zakir and Emdad.

They were initially sent to Meditake General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, SI Habib was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 1:45am.

Witnesses and police sources said that some Awami League workers were teasing a girl at Nikunja-2 around 8:45 pm when some activists of Juba League protested and locked into altercation.

On information, Khilkhet thana police rushed to the spot to intervene. “But both the groups swooped on the law enforcers and chopped them with sharp weapons,” police said.

The attackers also damaged the police van and tried to set fire to the vehicle. The driver, however, managed to escape with the vehicle.

Later, law enforcers, including RAB personnel, arrested 15 of the alleged attackers from the area.

Police said they raided the area to recover the pistol.
