Opposition out to foil war crimes trial: FM

DHAKA: Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni blamed the opposition parties for creating impediment to the trial of war criminals from their “anti-liberation” standpoint.

“The present opposition parties, which were involved in all kinds of anti-liberation activities, are now trying to foil war crimes trial,” she told a discussion meeting Friday.

But, she reaffirmed, the government is determined to complete the trial despite all obstructions.

Birsreshtha Motiur Rahman Foundation organised the discussion at the National Press Club, marking the anniversary of martyrdom of the Liberation War hero. Motiur’s widow Mili Rahman attended the program, presided over by Foundation vice-president Mahbub Elahi Manju Birprotik.

The foreign minister alleged that those who are spreading rumours that Bangladeshi workers will lose their jobs in Muslim countries if the trial of war criminals is held were either involved in war crimes or patronizing the war criminals.

“But we are facing no pressure from any other country to halt the trial. Different countries are rather supporting us for completing the trial properly,” she told the function.

Terming the celebration of what she called ‘fake birthday’ on the national mourning day a ‘perverse mentality’, Dipu said politics should be positive.
