DHAKA: The 34th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was observed in the country on Friday with due respect.
Nazrul Islam, popularly known as ‘Bidrohi Kabi’, died on Bhadra 12, 1383, (August 29, 1976) at the age of 77 after prolonged sufferings. His death anniversary is now observed according to the Bangla calendar.
Different socio-cultural and political organisations across the country have chalked out elaborate programme marking the day.
To mark the occasion, the Dhaka University authorities have taken an elaborate programme.
Students, teachers, officials and employees of Dhaka University, led by VC Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, placed floral wreaths at the mazar of the National Poet at 8 am to pay their homage.
Later, a discussion, chaired by the DU VC, was held on the mazar premises.
Among others, language hero Abdul Matin and Nazrul’s grand daughter Khilkhil Kazi were also present on the programme.
Main opposition BNP, led by its Senior Joint Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Bangabandhu Cultural Organisation, Bangladesh Nazrul Abriti Society (BNAS) and Nazrul Academy also placed wreaths at his mazar.
BNAS, led by its president Nasim Ahmed, demanded introducing a full course on the National Poet at the honors and masters level at all universities in the country.
Earlier on the day, a quran khwani was held at the DU central mosque after Fazr prayers.
Bangla Academy, Shilpakala Academy and Nazrul Institute also held programmes on the occasion.
